A week ago today, I was reunited with my belongings from the United States. Many thanks go to a team of individuals at Gentle Giant Moving Company in Boston, Doug Wiviott at Rainier Overseas Movers near Seattle, WA, and Jennifer Sloan at European Relocation Services in Marseille, France.
They all worked smoothly and responsively together; each handoff along the way was well coordinated. I never once felt as if I was working with separate companies. Thanks to the careful packing of the team of Gentle Giants in Boston, first in February 2019 when they packed and moved me (using a crane at times) out of my condo in Charlestown, Massachusetts,
into their storage warehouse, and then, almost exactly a year later, when they packed my belongings into a container to be shipped to France, everything arrived intact. Not one chip, crack, not even a light bulb (which unfortunately turned out to be unusable here in France!) was broken!
Doug and his team at Rainier were incredibly easy to work with over the Internet, extremely responsive and clear in their communications. Both Doug and Jennifer patiently guided me through the lengthy documentation process required for international shipments by governmental, transportation and customs officials. They made that complicated process which could have been a nightmare fairly easy. Doug made sure the container arrived on time for loading by Gentle Giant, arranged for the container to be loaded on the ship in Boston, and then worked with Jennifer to organize delivery in France. Though his work behind the scenes was invisible to me, except for our frequent email correspondence, Doug provided exceptional service!
Of course, no one could have expected the coronavirus epidemic which began to seriously spread into France and the United States just as the ship was scheduled to leave Boston. Nor could anyone have foreseen that the French government would pass restrictions on moving companies just before the ship arrived in Le Havre. I am ever so thankful that Jennifer, a patient, supportive and caring American, who speaks perfect French, was there to handle the unexpected twists and turns required
for unloading the container, for arranging for unplanned-for storage in a warehouse in Paris, and then for further managing the delivery of my belongings by her crew to my apartment in Dieppe. Those arrangements required Jennifer and her team, by now working remotely because of the lockdown in France, to get in touch with their crew in Paris, as well as with the building’s management and with city officials here in Dieppe. Jennifer kept in communication with me all along the way, all
the while working to keep additional expenses to a minimum.
The final step of the move required an outside lift since the elevator to the 5th floor (6th floor in the USA) was too small. The crew arrived at the expected time, providing me advanced notice as I had requested, with all required notifications and paperwork. The move-in went very quickly. Every member of the 4-person crew was most professional, quite good-natured, pleasant to work with and very tolerant of my attempts to communicate in French. They unpacked boxes as requested, reassembled
my dining room table, sofa and other furniture, and went to great lengths to make sure that everything arrived in good condition and that I was satisfied As the lift and truck drove away and I looked at the boxes that needed to be unpacked, I could only be extremely grateful for all the arrangements Jennifer, who checked in again during and after the move, had made and for the incredible team of wonderful people involved in making my move to France as smooth as it could have been and at very reasonable cost– despite all the difficulties along the way!

HOW AMAZING you and the movers were on the day of the move.  The men were so conscientious, helpful and friendly!  They ALWAYS found a way to move large and heavy boxes, beds, mattresses and couches upstairs (to the second, third and fourth floors of my flat) using such a narrow staircase it seemed impossible.  But they always found a way….at one point they even called and worked with a local carpenter to modify a four poster bed so as to fit!

In the midst of the whole (sometimes frustrating) process they even seemed to be enjoying themselves!

I am so thankful.  This house is now a home.

Today I received my Chicago property in Montpellier, France… without a single hitch! 

I am so very impressed by Laser International in Chicago, and its partner European Relocation Services in Marseilles.

In just 6 short weeks, both firms provided the most comprehensive (and accurate!) processing of any move I have ever made…and I have moved 6 times, 5 of which were domestic transfers, and some of which were disasters 🙂

Beyond courteous and friendly, these people addressed every one of my « expat » questions with experienced advice, and took immediate initiative to arrange the best method for performing my complicated relocation.

Their moving staffs are the most professional (and pleasant!) I have ever dealt with. And their work ethic is astounding.

I have been meaning to write to you for quite awhile and am sorry that it has taken so long.  Since we moved from Marseille, France to St. Augustine, Florida, on October 8, 2013, things have been hectic, crazy and tons of work.

It was only the shipment of our special things with you and your company that seemed to go smoothly, in fact, which is the reason for my letter today.  I would like to thank you for making what could have been a very stressful event, a manageable, easy and positive experience for our family.

The U.S. consulate in Marseille recommended your company to me and I will need to thank them for their suggestion as well.  From the very first conversation with you, I somehow knew I wanted to deal with you.  Your professionalism, honesty and quite frankly friendly manner (not so prevalent in Marseille) won me over immediately.  We were a very small shipment for ERS and yet you never made me feel insignificant whatsoever.  In fact, throughout the process, you kept us informed, let us know the details of our shipment and made us aware of any problems that COULD arise in a very straightforward manner.  While we were undoubtedly the smallest volume client you had at that moment, you made us feel like the most important.  But it was not only that.  We got quotes from three other agencies and yours was one of the lowest.  So not only did I like your professional and personal approach, but I appreciated your reasonable price, which honestly made me trust you even more.

I was nervous about this move as we were not taking a lot of possessions, only our personal and sentimental possessions.  As such, it was an emotional decision as well, to chose the right person to deal with our special little shipment.  You seemed to sense this, and did everything you could to make us feel comfortable, which, for me, was invaluable.

The packers fit our boxes into the crates so well that NO DAMAGE, not even one small crack or scratch, was found on ANYTHING.  Even with our things being stopped in U.S. customs, you kept us informed about the situation and everything was fine in the end, arriving when you estimated it would.  As you know, there was a slight issue with the last delivery agent, but I know that it was not under your control and it did not affect my opinion of you or ERS in the slightest.

As you know, Jennifer, we are an international family and tend to move more than the average family.  I would absolutely recommend you and ERS to anyone and would be happy to talk to any potential client who may be « on the fence » about who they should use for an international move.  If we move back to Europe at some point, I will only use YOUR COMPANY to do it. I hope ERS knows what an asset they have in you, Jennifer.

Thank you again, for helping us with such a stressful event in our life. With your guidance, professionalism, patience, organizational skills and warm way of conducting business, our move was positive and we thank you greatly for that lasting impression.
